Release 01 Overview
Complete catalog of the May 8, 2026 UAP document declassification under the PURSUE initiative. 161 files from 5 agencies spanning 80 years of records.
About Release 01
On May 8, 2026, the Department of War (DOW) released the first tranche of declassified UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) documents under the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE). This historic release includes 161 files from multiple government agencies, spanning eight decades of official U.S. government documentation.
The PURSUE initiative was established by executive directive following the 2024 congressional UAP hearings and the subsequent All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) comprehensive historical report. The initiative mandates systematic declassification and public release of UAP-related government records, prioritizing materials that have been subject to previous Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, congressional inquiry, or media reporting.
What’s Included in Release 01
This inaugural release contains materials from five government agencies, organized into thematic collections:
FBI Investigation Files
The complete 62-HQ-83894 case file on flying discs and UFO investigations (1947–1968), comprising approximately 40% of the total release by document count. This collection includes:
- 10 main case file sections with administrative correspondence, field reports, and technical analyses
- 233 incident summaries from the 38-143685 Box series
- Photographic evidence from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and other locations
- Serial files documenting specific investigations and notable incidents
- Cross-agency coordination records with Air Force Intelligence, CIA, and Naval Intelligence
- Post-1968 additions including the September 2023 sighting composite sketch and serial files
The FBI collection represents the most comprehensive single-agency investigation of the UFO phenomenon during the formative years of the national security state. Unlike the Air Force’s Project Blue Book, which had a public relations mandate, the FBI’s investigation was driven by genuine security concerns and reflects an agency genuinely uncertain about the nature of the phenomenon.
NASA Mission Records
Declassified mission transcripts, crew debriefings, technical reports, and video evidence from the Apollo, Gemini, and Skylab programs (1965–1973). This collection includes:
- Complete mission transcripts from Apollo 11, 12, and 17, and Gemini 7
- Technical and scientific crew debriefings with anomalous observation sections
- 16mm film video evidence from Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 missions
- Audio excerpts from Gemini 7 mission recordings
- Skylab technical crew debriefing from the first space station mission
The NASA collection is unique because it documents observations made by highly trained astronauts operating in the controlled environment of space, where conventional explanations (weather, aircraft, drones) do not apply. The records include observations of unidentified objects approaching spacecraft, anomalous lunar surface phenomena, and unusual light emissions.
DOW Mission Reports
Military UAP documentation from operations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific (2013–2026). This is the largest collection by page count and includes:
- 29 mission reports (MISREP) from CENTCOM, INDOPACOM, and AFRICOM operations
- 4 range fouler debriefs documenting airspace intrusions
- 20 unresolved UAP reports (PR series) with formal AARO assessments
- Video evidence from military sensor platforms (IR, EO, FMV)
- Geographic coverage spanning Iraq, Syria, Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Aden, Kuwait, UAE, Djibouti, Greece, and Indo-Pacific maritime areas
The DOW collection documents sustained, repeated encounters during routine military operations, with multiple sensor corroboration and trained military observers. All reports in this collection are classified as “unresolved” by AARO.
State Department Cables
Diplomatic correspondence documenting UAP observations by U.S. personnel at embassies and consulates worldwide (1940s–2020s). While specific cable contents are still under review for the next release tranche, Release 01 includes:
- Summary documentation of State Department UAP reporting procedures
- Cross-references to FBI and DOW files involving diplomatic personnel
- Coordination memoranda between State Department and AARO
- Classification guidance for UAP-related diplomatic communications
The State Department collection is significant because it demonstrates that UAP observations were not limited to military and intelligence personnel but extended to the diplomatic corps operating in countries worldwide.
Photographic and Video Evidence
Visual evidence spanning the full date range of the release:
- FBI photographic evidence: 24 images from the Oak Ridge series and other locations (1948–1952)
- NASA video evidence: 6 film segments from Apollo missions (1969–1972)
- Military video evidence: 19 video files from CENTCOM, INDOPACOM, and AFRICOM operations (2013–2026)
- Supporting imagery: Composite sketches, technical diagrams, and analytical overlays
The visual evidence is accompanied by technical analysis reports, sensor metadata, and formal assessments where available. Original video files are hosted on war.gov and DVIDS; this archive provides metadata, context, and links to official sources.

Declassification Process and Methodology
The PURSUE initiative employs a systematic declassification process:
Phase 1: Identification
AARO, in coordination with agency records officers, identified UAP-related documents through:
- FOIA request tracking databases
- Congressional inquiry records
- Media reporting archives
- Agency self-identification programs
- Historical records cross-referencing
Phase 2: Review
Each document underwent multi-level security review:
- Agency review: Originating agency evaluated classification markings and information sensitivity
- Intelligence community review: Documents with multiple agency equities reviewed by all stakeholders
- Foreign government consultation: Documents containing foreign government information shared with relevant allies
- Legal review: Evaluation of privacy, law enforcement, and litigation considerations
Phase 3: Redaction
Approved documents were processed for public release:
- Operational security: Redaction of specific tactics, techniques, and procedures
- Personnel protection: Removal of names and identifying information for military and intelligence personnel
- Source protection: Protection of intelligence sources and methods
- Foreign government information: Removal or obfuscation of allied government information
- Technical capabilities: Protection of sensor specifications and platform capabilities
Phase 4: Publication
Processed documents were prepared for public access:
- Optical character recognition (OCR): Searchable text extraction
- Metadata tagging: Standardized metadata for searching and filtering
- Contextual annotation: Addition of explanatory notes where necessary
- Format standardization: Conversion to accessible PDF format
- Web hosting: Publication on ufofiles.fyi with cross-referencing and topic organization
Classification History
Many documents in Release 01 carried significant classification markings at the time of creation:
- SECRET//REL TO USA, FVEY: Military operational reports shared with Five Eyes allies
- SECRET//NOFORN: Intelligence reports not releasable to foreign nationals
- CONFIDENTIAL: Internal agency reports and administrative correspondence
- RESTRICTED/UNCLASSIFIED (formerly): Documents originally unclassified but later reviewed
The declassification determinations reflect a shift in government posture toward UAP transparency:
“The classification of UAP-related information was historically driven by concerns about revealing intelligence capabilities, protecting operational security, and avoiding public speculation. The PURSUE initiative recognizes that these concerns must be balanced against the public’s right to know and the scientific community’s need for data. The majority of historical UAP documentation can now be released without compromising national security.”
— PURSUE Declassification Review Board, 2026
Document Quality and Limitations
Researchers should be aware of several limitations in the Release 01 collection:
Age and Condition
Documents from the 1940s–1960s show varying degrees of preservation:
- Some pages exhibit fading, water damage, or deterioration
- Microfilm reproduction quality varies
- Handwritten annotations may be difficult to decipher
- Original document organization may not match current filing systems
Redactions
All documents contain redactions protecting:
- Names of intelligence personnel and confidential informants
- Specific operational details (locations, times, unit designations)
- Technical capabilities of military platforms and sensors
- Foreign government information shared in confidence
Redacted portions are indicated with standard classification markings (“[REDACTED]” or “[CLASSIFIED INFORMATION]”) and, where possible, include explanatory notes about the redaction category.
Contextual Gaps
Some documents reference related materials not included in Release 01:
- Cross-references to documents still under review
- Mentions of oral briefings or presentations not preserved in writing
- References to destroyed or lost records
- Allusions to compartmented programs not subject to PURSUE
OCR and Transcription Errors
Automated OCR processing may introduce errors:
- Misread characters in poor-quality scans
- Formatting issues in complex documents (tables, forms)
- Missing pages in multi-page documents
- Incorrect metadata due to filing system inconsistencies
UFOFiles.fyi maintains an error correction process. Users can report suspected OCR errors or missing pages for review and correction.
Important Notice
All materials in this release are unresolved cases, meaning the government has not made a definitive determination on the nature of the observed phenomena. The Department of War welcomes private-sector analysis and expertise.
Specifically:
- No confirmed explanations: The government has not identified any of the objects or phenomena described in these documents as belonging to a known category (aircraft, drone, balloon, natural phenomenon, or sensor artifact)
- No evidence of foreign technology: While foreign technology cannot be definitively ruled out, no document confirms that any observed object belonged to a foreign power
- No evidence of extraterrestrial origin: The documents do not contain proof that any observed object was of extraterrestrial origin
- No evidence of threat: No document indicates that any observed object demonstrated hostile intent or caused harm to U.S. personnel or property
- Ongoing investigation: AARO continues to investigate current UAP reports and review historical records for additional release

- Analysis submission: Portal for researchers to submit analytical findings for AARO review
- Error correction: Process for reporting document quality issues, metadata errors, or missing materials
Significance of Release 01
This release represents a watershed moment in government transparency regarding the UAP phenomenon:
- Scope: 161 files from 5 agencies spanning 80 years—the largest single government release of UAP documentation
- Credibility: Documents created by military, intelligence, and scientific personnel without expectation of public disclosure
- Consistency: Similar observations documented across different agencies, time periods, and geographic locations
- Scientific value: Sensor data, technical analyses, and precise measurements suitable for scientific study
- Historical context: Establishes that UAP documentation extends back to the earliest days of the national security state
- Accountability: Provides the public with primary source materials to evaluate government handling of the UAP issue
Release 01 does not provide definitive answers about the nature of UAP, but it fundamentally changes the terms of public discourse. No longer can the phenomenon be dismissed as a product of unreliable witnesses or insufficient data. The documents in this archive establish that UAP have been observed by credible personnel, detected by advanced sensors, and documented in official government records for decades.
The questions raised by these documents—What are these objects? Who operates them? What is their intent?—remain unanswered. But for the first time in history, the public has access to the primary evidence that will be necessary to answer them.
